🌱 The First Morning of Meteorological Spring
It’s a cool Sunday morning. Frost is glistening on the rooftops around the farm.
Before I retired from my 9-to-5 job, I cherished the slowness and quiet of Sunday mornings. Even now, that peaceful rhythm remains. The pups seem to enjoy the extra slumber too.
Today marks the first day of meteorological spring — March 1 to May 31 — aligned with seasonal temperature patterns. Astronomical spring arrives March 21, when the earth shifts its position relative to the sun.
Either way… spring is coming. And you can feel it.
✈️ A Quick Trip Away from the Farm
This weekend I’m leaving the farm for a week — not ideal timing, but for very good reasons.
First stop: Ontario to celebrate the 1st and 3rd birthdays of two of our grandkids. Then I’m heading to Newfoundland to cheer on my daughter as she competes at the National Powerlifting Championships.
She has an excellent chance not only of winning, but of breaking records in her weight category. If she does, she’ll represent Canada at the World Championships in Dubai this summer.
Yes, I am a very proud mom.
It’s been a lifetime of supporting her — gymnastics, rowing, and now powerlifting. And I won’t complain about enjoying some proper fish and chips in St. John’s while I’m there. I fell in love with Newfoundland last year, and I’m looking forward to being back.
Farmer Don will be holding the fort — watering thousands of plant starts, keeping the greenhouse and hoophouse running smoothly and preparing beds for spring plantings.
🍅 Tomato Season Has Officially Begun
This week was exciting as we started the first 20 tomato and pepper seeds of the season.
Most , however, will be started when I return from my trip. I’m often asked when the “best” time is to start tomato seeds. I’ve heard everything from early February to April.
The real answer?
It depends.
Variety, location, microclimate, and your planting date all factor into the right timing.
Later this week I’ll be sharing my new FREE 10-page guide:
🍅 The Sayward Haven Farm Guide to
Growing Amazing Tomatoes
Discover how to grow flavour-packed, high-yield tomatoes using the same proven techniques behind the tomatoes grown at Sayward Haven Farm
If you grow tomatoes — or want to try for the first time this year — make sure you download it. I’ve been growing tomatoes for almost 40 years, and they are still my favourite plant in the garden.
If you grow just one plant this summer, make it a tomato.
They thrive in almost any sunny location — from a compact patio container to a trellised plant in your vegetable garden. And the flavour? There is simply no comparison to a homegrown tomato.
A warm cherry tomato picked straight from the vine on a summer afternoon — that’s what makes gardening worth it.
And starting with strong, well grown plants makes all the difference.
🌸 Mark Your Calendar: Annual Spring Plant Sale

All plants will be listed on our website later this month.
Pre-orders for your “must-have” plants open: 🗓 April 12 at 8:00am and close: 🗓 Wednesday, April 22 at midnight

Spring is waking up. The greenhouses are filling.
