Butter Tarts: Canadian Nostalgia and Memories With My Dad

Butter tarts hold a special place in many hearts, especially bringing back memories with loved ones. For me, the tradition of making butter tarts with my Dad became a treasured memory. We used a box mix - neither of my parents are big bakers - but my grandmother was French Canadian and he had a love of butter tarts from his upbringing.

The exact origin of butter tarts is unknown but it's widely believed to have originated in Canada in the late 1600s, possibly from French Canadian settlers adapting recipes to local ingredients.

The first known recipe for a butter tart was published in the "Women's Auxillary of The Royal Victoria Hospital Cookbook" published in 1900. Over time, variations with raisins, nuts and other additions became popular. The butter tart is considered the quintessential Canadian dessert.
